![]() ![]() Hello December! Seriously, this year has flown by so quickly, though I can’t say I’m too sorry to see November behind me, since it was such a busy month. Mostly it also serves as a recap post, so sometimes I’ll throw in stuff like reading challenge progress reports, book lists, and other random bookish thoughts or announcements. ![]() Mogsy’s Bookshelf Roundup: Stacking the Shelves & Recent Readsīookshelf Roundup is a feature I do every other weekend which fills the role of several blog memes, like Stacking the Shelves where I talk about the new books I’ve added to my library or received for review, as well as It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? where I round up what I’ve read since the last update and what I’m planning to read soon. ![]() ![]() It’s clear that there was patient and meticulous investment put into moulding the thought patterns of each story’s narrator. ![]() ![]() It’s clear that Saunders is deeply skilled when it comes to voice, and that he must have spent years and years honing this craft. Suddenly, we’re invested in each of the narrators’ worlds, and their lingering disappearance a few pages away is less of a bother. Striking this balance, the intellectual stimulation that comes with the stories automatically makes the actual subject matter more engaging. It’s hard work to decipher exactly what’s going on a lot of the time, but it gives us enough hooks, enough curious turns of phrase, and just enough personality that it doesn’t alienate us altogether. Reading the opening pages to all the stories is a real mental wrestle match, particular the fanfaring ‘Victory Lap’, which begins like some inexplicable fever dream before settling down into a story of neighbourly courage. In each of these ten installments, Saunders’ writing grows more original, more experimental, at times outwardly surreal, but always deeply enticing. ![]() What makes Saunders’ stories tick is his focus on style over plot or subject matter. ![]() ![]() ![]() Note: This is an unofficial trivia meant to supplement a reader’s experience to books they already love.
